The taxonomic position of Yersinia kristensenii rochesterensis subspecies and Yersinia occitanica has been re-evaluated, confirming that they belong to the same genospecies. Y. kristensenii rochesterensis should be elevated to a new species status named Yersinia rochesterensis sp. nov. The taxonomy of Yersinia genus has recently expanded with the description of new species, including important human zoonotic pathogens.
The taxonomic position of Yersinia kristensenii subsp. rochesterensis and Yersinia occitanica was re-evaluated by genomic analy-sis. Average nucleotide identity (ANI), digital DNA?DNA hybridization values, and phylogenetic analyses of the type strains indicate that Y. kristensenii subsp. rochesterensis and Y. occitanica are the same genospecies. Additionally, the overall genomic relatedness index (OGRI) values reveal that Y. kristensenii subsp. rochesterensis should be elevated to species status as Yersinia rochesterensis sp. nov. The taxonomy of the Yersinia genus has experienced a recent expansion with the description of several new species within the past two years [1?4]. Three Yersinia species are important human zoonotic pathogens with Yersinia pestis responsible for some of the most impactful pandemics in recorded human history [5]. Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis are etiological agents for the foodborne illness yersiniosis
