Microvascular dysfunction in COVID-19: the MYSTIC study

Alexandros Rovas et al.

Summary: Our study found that COVID-19 patients have reduced microvascular density, slower red blood cell velocity, and glycocalyx damage. Elevated markers of endothelial dysfunction are associated with disease severity and can predict 60-day in-hospital mortality.

Vascular endothelial injury exacerbates coronavirus disease 2019: The role of endothelial glycocalyx protection

Hideshi Okada et al.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that the severity of COVID-19 may be attributed to a systemic, thrombotic, and inflammatory disease which damages multiple organs including the lungs, heart, brain, toes, and liver. Despite the important roles of vascular endothelial glycocalyx in vascular endothelial injury, thrombosis, vasculitis, and inflammation, the link between this structure and vascular endothelial cell dysfunction in COVID-19 remains unclear.

Microcirculatory, Endothelial, and Inflammatory Responses in Critically Ill Patients With COVID-19 Are Distinct From Those Seen in Septic Shock: A Case Control Study

Sam D. Hutchings et al.

Summary: In critically ill COVID-19 patients, there is less vasoactive drug requirement, lower plasma lactate levels, and no evidence of significant sublingual microcirculatory impairment, widespread endothelial injury, or marked inflammatory cytokine release compared to patients with septic shock. The hyperinflammatory response and organ failures seen in septic shock do not appear typical of COVID-19 infection.
