This study determined the density, viscosity, and surface tension of a mixed solution of 1,3-propanediol and dimethyl sulfoxide at various mass proportions, along with calculating thermodynamic quantities. It was found that the O atom in the S=O bond forms hydrogen bonds with the H atom on the hydroxyl group in the alcohol molecule, affecting the structure and strength of the bonds in the solution.
In this position, the density, viscosity, and surface tension of 21 diverse mass proportion of 1,3-propanediol (PDO) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) mixed solution were determined in the temperature range of 293.15-318.15 K under atmospheric pressure. Otherwise, some thermodynamic quantities were computed on the basis of the measured values of the experiment, and the intermolecular forces of mixed solutions were investigated by means of spectroscopic and computational chemistry. Which testified that the O atom in the S=O bond has hydrogen bond force with the H atom on the hydroxyl group in the alcohol molecule, and its structure is (CH3)(2)S=O center dot center dot center dot HO(CH2)(3)OH center dot center dot center dot S=O(CH3)(2); meanwhile, the bond length of the O-H bonds of PDO increases and its strength decreases.
