New insights into heavy metal elements deposition in the snowpacks of mountain glaciers in the eastern Tibetan Plateau

Xiaoyu Jiao et al.

Summary: The study investigated atmospheric deposition and contamination of heavy metal elements in glaciers of the eastern Tibetan Plateau in the summer of 2017. It found high concentrations of heavy metals in some glaciers, indicating varying degrees of impact from atmospheric anthropogenic pollutants. Comparisons with precipitation in Chinese and South Asian cities showed lower levels of heavy metal concentrations in the glacial samples, suggesting significant enrichment of anthropogenic pollutants. The study also suggested potential transport routes from densely populated areas in Asia to the glaciers, emphasizing the importance of controlling pollution emissions in surrounding areas for the protection of the glaciers in the future.
