The study demonstrates that the addition of tungsten can enhance the crevice corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steels, leading to higher initiation and repassivation crevice temperatures.
In this work, the influence of tungsten on the crevice corrosion resistance of three super duplex stainless steels (SDSS) containing 0.0, 0.6, and 2.1 wt.% W was determined. The PD-GS-PD technique was used to estimate the critical crevice repassivation temperature by performing tests at different temperatures. Additionally, long-term potentiostatic experiments were conducted as a function of temperature in natural seawater to validate PD-GS-PD testing. Results showed that W improved crevice corrosion resistance as evidenced by the higher initiation and repassivation crevice temperatures, which were 7.5-15. degrees C higher in the 2.1 wt.% W SDSS than in the W-free case.
