Cyclometalated complexes are important intra-molecularly stabilized organometallic compounds with diverse applications in synthesis, catalysis, life sciences, material science, and opto-electronics. The focus has been on nitrogen and phosphorus complexes, while sulfur has remained a key element in these compounds. Recent reports have also highlighted metalation of selenium and tellurium compounds, along with isolating complexes with M center dot center dot center dot H-C interactions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of cyclometalated complexes of palladium and platinum with Group-16 donor ligands, discussing their stoichiometric reactions, applications, and future perspectives.
Cyclometalated complexes represent an important family of intra-molecularly stabilized organometallic compounds. Since their first isolation in the mid-1960s, the scope and interest in these compounds have diversified in different areas encompassing from synthesis, catalysis, life sciences, material science and opto-electronics. The area has been dominated by nitrogen and phosphorus cyclometalated complexes while among Group-16 ligands, sulfur remained in focus. Recently metalation of selenium and tellurium compounds has also been reported. In addition, complexes with M center dot center dot center dot H-C interaction, which were believed to be intermediate species prior to metalation, have been isolated. Stoichiometric reactions of cyclometalated complexes of palladium and platinum derived from Group-16 donor compounds, their applications in catalysis and in materials sciences are described. Finally, conclusions and perspective on the opportunities and challenges for the future development of these complexes are given. This review intends to give a comprehensive overview of cyclometalated complexes of palladium and platinum with Group-16 donor ligands so as to facilitate further progress of the subject area and to realize their full potential in different areas.
