Self-healing and fatigue performance of poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate modified bitumen

The study investigated the fatigue and self-healing performance of poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate modified bitumen using various tests. Results showed that modifying virgin bitumen with PHEMA expanded the aromatic part of the binder. Additionally, the aging effects on healing capability were reduced by PHEMA addition. The healing indices ranged from 0.26 to 4.45, and the trends of PHEMA percentage with different tests were mostly consistent.
This research study aims to investigate fatigue and self-healing performance of poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate modified bitumen using Linear Amplitude Sweep, Time Sweep, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance tests and healing indices. Results show that modifying virgin bitumen with PHEMA expands the aromatic part of the binder. NMR and FTIR results show aging effects on healing capability are reduced by PHEMA addition. Also, the results show that healing indices are between 0.26 and 4.45. The comparison of HI indices trends with N-f trend shows that the PHEMA%-Log (N-f) trends are almost equal to the PHEMA%-HIFTIR&NMR trends. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
