A simple method for synthesizing luminescent lambda(5)-phosphanaphthalenes and zwitterionic nido-carborane fused six-membered phosphacycles has been developed. The method involves the reaction of ortho-phosphinobenzoaldehydes or ortho-phosphinocarboranylaldehydes with an electron-deficient alkyne, respectively, to achieve similar results with imino analogues.
