A chitosan-derived nitrogen-doped carbon (NDC) with a well-designed pore structure is prepared using a novel activation process with ZnO and water vapor. The obtained NDC gas diffusion electrode for oxygen reduction exhibits higher performance than a Pt/carbon black electrode in the current density range of 1-500 mA/cm(2).
