Volunteers in palliative care: A healthcare system-wide cross-sectional survey

Steven Vanderstichelen et al.

Summary: This study aims to describe organized volunteering practices in palliative care across different healthcare settings, including tasks, training, supervision, and volunteers' evaluations. The results show that dedicated palliative care volunteers tend to provide multidimensional support, while sitting service volunteers focus more on practical support. Training and consistent supervision are needed for volunteers to offer complementary support to patients with serious illnesses, especially in nursing homes and community home care settings.
