Water retention value predicts biomass recalcitrance for pretreated biomass: biomass water interactions vary based on pretreatment chemistry and reflect composition

Sune Tjalfe Thomsen et al.

Summary: Predicting enzymatic saccharification yield based on biomass-water interaction measurements offers advantages for process optimization and control, but the predictive powers are low when comparing different types of biomasses. The correlation between water retention value (WRV) and enzymatic saccharification yield (ESY) is highly dependent on pretreatment chemistry, indicating a complex interplay between recalcitrance and biomass-water interactions.
