Purple bacteria as added-value protein ingredient in shrimp feed: Penaeus vannamei growth performance, and tolerance against Vibrio and ammonia stress

Abbas Alloul et al.

Summary: Aquafeeds that contain protein ingredients like fishmeal and soybean meal can put pressure on the environment, but finding novel protein sources such as dried microbial biomass like single-cell protein or microbial protein can lead to a more sustainable aquaculture industry. Research on using purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB) as an added-value protein ingredient for shrimp showed positive results in terms of shrimp growth, feed conversion ratio, and tolerance against ammonia stress.
