The Prediction of Road Cracks through Acoustic Signature: Extended Finite Element Modeling and Experiments

Rosario Fedele et al.

Summary: Traffic-induced vibrations and noise have significant effects on the livability and structural integrity of the built environment. Despite a lack of studies linking the propagation of vibrations into road pavements and the related acoustic response to assess structural health, this study successfully models these phenomena using a Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis and an Extended Finite Element Model (EXFEM) to predict the effects of cracks on road acoustic signature over time. Preliminary results show that the EXFEM model can effectively reproduce measured signals and forecast the impact of different types of cracks on vibration propagation in road pavements.
