Occurrence of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in the Gulf of Trieste and the northern Adriatic Sea

Tilen Genov et al.

Summary: The common dolphin in the Mediterranean experienced a significant decline by the late 1970s, with the species virtually disappearing from the northern Adriatic Sea. Boat surveys in the Gulf of Trieste revealed that the common bottlenose dolphin is now the only regularly occurring cetacean species in the area, although sporadic sightings of common dolphins have been documented. Photo-identification data suggested long-distance movements of common dolphins, with the species continuing to be rare in the region.

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the north-western Adriatic Sea: Spatial distribution and effects of trawling

Silvia Bonizzoni et al.

Summary: The study provides novel quantitative information on dolphin spatial distribution and their occurrence after fishing activities in the northern Adriatic Sea. Results show that trawling activities, along with other physiographic, biological, and anthropogenic variables, influenced dolphin distribution. Evidence contributed by this study can inform management action to protect one of the world's areas most heavily impacted by fishing and human encroachment.
