Mitochondrial dysfunction in cardiovascular disease: Current status of translational research/clinical and therapeutic implications

Antonis S. Manolis et al.

Summary: Mitochondria play a crucial role in providing energy for cells and have various functions beyond energy production. Dysfunction of mitochondria can lead to cardiomyopathies and other cardiovascular diseases, often caused by mutations in mitochondrial or nuclear DNA, as well as aging, disease, and environmental stresses. Developing targeted therapeutic strategies for mitochondria remains a challenge due to variable responses based on the underlying causes of dysfunction.
