Epidemic Thunderstorm Asthma: Lessons Learned from the Storm Down-Under

Retrospective analysis of epidemic thunderstorm asthma in children in Yulin, northwest China

Summary: A thunderstorm asthma epidemic in pediatric patients occurred in Yulin, China in September 2018, with a higher proportion of affected male children. Among the 51 hospitalized children, 56% had no previous asthma history, 25% had confirmed asthma diagnosis, 67% had allergic rhinitis history in August and September, 76% had moderate asthma, 94% had positive IgE against mugwort pollen, and 78% were monosensitized to pollen.

2016 Thunderstorm-asthma epidemic in Melbourne, Australia: An analysis of patient characteristics associated with hospitalization

Summary: The study found that thunderstorm asthma mainly affects patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis, sensitized to ryegrass pollen, and some without a history of asthma. Patients requiring hospitalization typically had a history of asthma, uncontrolled symptoms, allergic rhinitis, high blood eosinophil count, and lower lung function.
