The Thiol-Modifier Effects of Organoselenium Compounds and Their Cytoprotective Actions in Neuronal Cells

Summary: Pharmacological studies on organoselenium compounds have shown that their biological effects may not be directly related to their GPx mimetic and thiol oxidase activities, but rather to the up-regulation of endogenous antioxidant defenses through thiol modifier effects. The protective effects of both well-known and newly developed organoselenium compounds against oxidative challenges in neuronal cells were investigated and compared.
