Aspergillus fumigatus is a deadly fungal pathogen in immunocompromised patients. A report by Goncalves et al. reveals that melanin, a secondary metabolite present at the surface of infecting fungal spores, induces glycolysis in macrophages to promote inflammatory responses. This opens a window for the development of innovative host-directed antifungal therapies.
