The supply of the ever-growing demands for exhaustable natural resources today ranks as one of the major challenges facing the global pavement industry in its efforts to construct and maintain global hot mix asphalt pavements. Parallel to this, the surfeit of construction and demolition waste (CDW) residues has also become an alarming issue from both environmental and economic standpoints. However, CDW is also believed to possess a promising market potential once it has undergone conversion into virgin materials. As such, the core aim of this paper has been to carry out an in-depth literature review that will reveal alternative ways to utilize CDW in asphalt paving projects. Thus, this work hopes to present methods that will serve to incentivize highway administrations to develop new technical specifications and guidelines on CDW recycling. In the process of seeking out these alternatives, this review also includes efforts aimed at confirming the safety, tolerability and efficacy of this CDW utilization by urging support for the production of larger amounts of such materials and the conducting of suitability trials. In this way, this paper attempts to herald a new era of economic innovation in pavement engineering.
