The role of anthocyanins as antidiabetic agents: from molecular mechanisms to in vivo and human studies

Summary: Research has shown that polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins, found in plant foods play a key role in combating oxidative stress and aging. Specifically, anthocyanins have been shown to have potential in inhibiting enzymes and affecting gene expression and metabolic pathways related to glucose, thereby modulating diabetes and associated disorders. Human intervention studies have also suggested that high doses of anthocyanins can be beneficial in preventing or treating type 2 diabetes, but further standardized research is needed to draw general conclusions and claim benefits for the broader population.
