This paper presents an innovative design for a multi-capacity force measurement instrument, providing an economical and simpler solution for force measurement in a large span. Through prototype fabrication and testing at the German national metrology institute, the validity of the design was confirmed, with the system capacity doubled to 20 kN and achieving class 0.5 according to ISO 376:2011 within the desired range.
This paper introduces an innovative design for a multi-capacity force measurement instrument. This instrument may replace a group of force transducers established to cover a specific force measurement range. This novel design introduces an economical and simpler solution for force measurement in a large span. Furthermore, it provides a solution for the restrictions, which limit the usage of an ordinary force transducer, where it's recommended to use a force transducer neither at a load below 10% nor above 100% of its rated capacity. To validate the proposed design, a prototype was designed then fabricated and tested with the help of force measurement department at PTB; the German national metrology institute. The obtained results prove the validity of the novel design. The capacity of the system was doubled from 10 kN to 20 kN. The instrument after capacity duplication achieves class 0.5 according to ISO 376:2011 along the desired range.
