As one of the promising high energy density candidate lithium ion battery cathode materials, Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (named NCM811) composites suffers from serious structural changes on (de)lithiation, which has a detrimental effect on the cycling stability, thermal stability and storage properties. In this work, Al doped ZnO (named AZO) was employed to modify the NCM811surface particles via simple solid-state reaction method. A suppression to the growth of interfacial impendence due to the positive effect of AZO coating during progressive cycles, which can be confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Good HF scavenging ability, avoiding the active material reduction degradation, was also brought in by the AZO coating. The modified NCM811 with enhanced structural stability, cycling capability and rate performance is a potential candidate for cathode materials of lithium-ion battery.
