Direct numerical simulation of the effects of fluid/fluid and fluid/rock interactions on the oil displacement by low salinity and high salinity water: Pore-scale occupancy and displacement mechanisms

MohammadReza Alizadeh et al.

Summary: Laboratory experiments have shown that performance of waterflooding in oil reservoirs could be significantly increased by lowering the ionic strength and/or manipulation of its composition, which is generally known as low salinity waterflooding (LSWF). The mechanisms involved in additional oil production can be categorized in fluid/fluid and fluid/rock interactions, with simulation studies highlighting the importance of considering both types of interactions for effective LSWF.

The effect of brine salinity and oil components on dynamic IFT behavior of oil-brine during low salinity water flooding: Diffusion coefficient, EDL establishment time, and IFT reduction rate

Hamed Farhadi et al.

Summary: The dynamic interfacial tension of crude oil/brine system was measured in a wide range of seawater salinity, revealing a trend where the IFT reduces as brine salinity increases, contrary to existing theories. A new model based on drift-diffusion theory was developed to explain this phenomenon, considering the current of oil molecules towards the oil-water interface and the resistance against this current caused by concentration gradient.
