Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), which are two-dimensionally organized structures, are known as anionic clays. LDHs present great properties such as excellent biocompatibility and stability. Besides that, it can harbor several molecules in their interlayer region. The benefits of this technology applied to photoprotective molecules, are presented and discussed. LDHs, when applied to sunscreens, can protect the skin against UVA and UVB radiation. On the other hand, application of some photoprotective molecules has limited use due to reported cases of toxicity and skin irritation. The structure of LDHs have the ability of absorbing ultraviolet rays and promotes a photoprotective effect on its own. Also, they act as stabilizers of photoprotective molecules and prevent direct contact of these molecules with the skin.
