This study presents a decision-making method for remanufacturing timing based on evaluation of product performance through online monitoring of structural failure in key components. The effectiveness and feasibility of the method is validated by analyzing the pre-decision remanufacturing timing of the crankshaft in a diesel engine.
Most remanufacturing cores are obtained from end-of-life products with variable failure condition, and uncertainties in these cores are issues about product remanufacturing. In this study, considering the connotation of Pre-decision remanufacturing, the decision-making method for remanufacturing timing is presented with an evaluation of product performance based on the structural failure in key components by on-line monitoring. First, the operating performance is discussed with different considerations for remanufacturing timing; meanwhile, the structural failure procedure is identified as the foundation of performance evaluation, and the mapping model of operating performance, remanufacturability, and structural failure condition is presented. Second, the failure condition in key components that is set as the indicator of Pre-decision remanufacturing timing and obtained by optimizing economic and environmental considerations is identified on the basis of the mapping relationship between structural failure and sensor signal. Finally, the Pre-decision remanufacturing timing of the crankshaft in diesel engine is analyzed to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the method. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd.
