Fabrication of colorful wear-resistant superhydrophobic coatings based on chemical modified halloysite

Most superhydrophobic coatings have poor mechanical stability and lack color diversity, which severely restricts their practical application. A hybrid superhydrophobic coating was prepared by spraying commercial epoxy resin (EP) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) modified by cationic dyes and organosilane. Apart from robust superhydrophobicity (CA > 165 degrees, SA < 3 degrees), it shows good mechanical and chemical stability. The water contact angle of the coating slightly decreased by about 5.4 % after 40 abrasion cycles and almost remained unchanged after being soaked in strong acid (1 mol/L), strong alkali (2 mol/L) and 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 10 days. The corrosion resistance of the coating in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The superhydrophobic EP@HNTs/Color@ POS coating displayed extremely large Charge transfer resistance (5.346 x 10(6) Omega cm(2)). Compared with the colorful superhydrophobic coatings reported previously, coatings prepared by this method not only have excellent mechanical and chemical stability, but also possess strong Corrosion protection properties. Above all, our method is environmental-friendly and facile to operate, promising large-scale industrial applications.
