Fatty acids of human milk - a review

Rafal Bobinski et al.

Summary: The composition of human milk is the result of millions of years of mammal evolution. Fatty acids, particularly saturated and monounsaturated ones, play vital roles in providing energy, immunity, building blocks, and assisting in hormonal and metabolic processes. The structural differences between fatty acids determine their physiological importance, especially in the development of the nervous system and other structures. The mother's body has adaptive mechanisms to adjust the amount of fatty acids in milk based on the child's needs and the state of health, optimizing their composition accordingly.

Vegan or vegetarian diet and breast milk composition - a systematic review

Summary: The nutritional composition of breast milk is related to maternal diet, but mothers adhering to vegetarian or vegan diets produce breast milk of comparable nutritional value to non-vegetarian mothers. Dietary choices should not be a sole criterion for excluding donor candidates in human milk banks.
