Although a number of studies indicated that the addition of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) brings a lot of benefits on properties of asphalt binder, some studied did report that SBS had some drawbacks as asphalt modifier, such as poor storage stability. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of partially replacing SBS with APAO as asphalt binder modifier. The storage stability, work-ability, physical and rheological properties, aging properties, and the chemical properties of the SBSAPAO compound modified asphalt binders were investigated. The results indicated that the SBS-APAO compound modified asphalt binders with APAO content of 3% or higher showed better storage stability, high- and intermediate-temperature properties than the SBS modified asphalt binder. In addition, the SBS-APAO compound modified binders showed comparable workability and low-temperature properties in comparison to the SBS modified asphalt binder. Overall, it has potential to improve the storage stability and rheological properties of SBS modified asphalt binder without raising the material's cost by partially replacing 2% of SBS with 3% of APAO (by weight of asphalt binder).
