Properties and Assessment of Applications of Red Mud (Bauxite Residue): Current Status and Research Needs

Application of biopolymers for improving the strength characteristics of red mud waste

Summary: This study explored the potential of two biopolymers (guar gum and xanthan gum) in enhancing the strength properties of red mud. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in compressive strength for the stabilized samples compared to the untreated samples. Morphological analysis showed the formation of gels and their role in particle aggregation, while no changes in mineralogical compositions were observed. Both biopolymers proved effective in improving strength characteristics, with xanthan gum being more superior. The biopolymers were able to provide good strength to the treated samples despite the extreme alkalinity, highlighting their usefulness and applicability.
