A new approach for the systematic development of constitutive models for composites is proposed. The approach relies on the generation of a representative volume element of the composite microstructure, which in this case is a flax fibre/epoxy matrix unidirectional composite. The microstructure is subjected to different deformation states based on which the deformation profile as well as the yield surface of the composite is identified. A non-associative anisotropic viscoelastic-viscoplastic continuum model is developed for the microstructure and is validated by subjecting the microstructure to other load states. The continuum model is assigned to the tows of a plain weave flax fibre/epoxy composite and the deformation behaviour of the composite is studied as well as the yield surface is identified through virtual experiments.
