The quasi-static tests are conducted on three types of energy-absorption combined hexagonal aluminium honeycomb structures, i.e. traditional single-layer honeycomb, two-layer combined honeycombs at the stacking angles of 0 degrees and 90 degrees, and four-layer combined honeycombs to investigate the cutting properties at different stacking angles of combined honeycombs. The effects of stacking angles are discussed and the cutting mechanism between combined honeycombs is analyzed. It reports that the cutting stress of 90 degrees-stacking honeycombs is 30% larger than that of 0 degrees-stacking honeycombs. The absorbed energy of the cutting process accounts for about 30% of the total strain energy of honeycombs. The deformation sequence of different four-layer combined honeycombs can be controlled based on the difference of cutting stress at the stacking angles of 0 degrees and 90 degrees. Besides, a simplified theoretical model is proposed to obtain the relationship between the cutting stress and stacking angles, which is consistent with the experimental measurements.
