This paper studies in detail the heat transfer performance of a staggered arranged jet array impinging on a cubic micro pin fin roughened target plate in a generic system, on the purpose of extending the knowledge of heat transfer enhancement in a staggered impingement array. This subject has only rarely been studied in literature. Experiments are conducted with the transient thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) method. Pressure taps placed along the test facility are used for pressure loss evaluation. The rib behavior for different jet Reynolds numbers (Re = 15,000-35,000), different cross-flow schemes (maximum, medium and minimum cross-flow) and different separation distances (H/D = 3-5) is studied in detail, to determine a configuration with the best thermal performance. A steady state Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) method using the Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model is used for a numerical simulation, to help to understand the experimental phenomena. The rib performance is compared to a previously studied inline impinging case, to learn the effect of jet arrangement. The work can be a basis for the optimization of jet arrangements for impingement cooling in turbomachinery applications.
