The recently proposed concept of 3-D frequency selective structures (FSSs) is explored for terahertz (THz) applications. A simplest form of 3-D FSS is considered. It consists of a two-dimensional periodic array of nonresonant apertures, which are etched out of two conducting surfaces of a printed circuit board (PCB). Quality factor of this FSS can be easily controlled by the size of nonresonant coupling apertures. Unlike other reported THz FSS designs, the proposed structure does not require a silicon substrate and microfabrication chamber. Instead, it can be fabricated on a commonly available double-sided copper PCB, through a low-cost fabrication method.
