The forming mechanism of anomalous eutectic structure (AES) in undercooled eutectic alloys has been a controversial issue. In this work, we conducted in situ observation of the AES forming process in an Ni-18.7 at.% Sn eutectic alloy using a high-temperature laser scanning confocal microscope. Our results provide an evidence of the AES formation induced by remelting of primary eutectic lamellae constituted by Ni3Sn and alpha-Ni lamellae. During recalescence, a pronounced remelting of the Ni3Sn phase into liquid occurs, while the alpha-Ni lamellae subject to a rapid morphological transition into granules. Eventually, the completion of solidification leads to the AES formation. (C) 2019 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
