A new nano-linear Zn-substituted Strandberg-type phosphomolybdate (H(2)en)(6){[Zn(H2O)(4)](P-2-Mo5O23)}(3)center dot 10H(2)O (abbreviated as ZPM) (en = ethanediamine) has been synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), IR spectrum, UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural analysis shows that [Zn(H2O)(4)](2+) as a linker connected with two adjacent [P2Mo5O23](6-) clusters to form a 1-D structure. Notably, the chemical environment of three adjacent {[Zn(H2O)(4)](P2Mo5O23)}(4-) are different in solid state. To our knowledge, the phenomenon is very rare in polyoxometalates. Moreover, ZPM can catalyze the production of ROS efficiently and can inhibit the proliferation of E. coli by the synergy effect of Zn2+ and [P2Mo5O23](6-) clusters. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V.
