Smoking and the risk for bipolar disorder: evidence from a bidirectional Mendelian randomisation study

Jentien M. Vermeulen et al.

Summary: The study suggests that smoking initiation and lifetime smoking are likely causal risk factors for developing bipolar disorder. There is also some evidence that liability to bipolar disorder may increase smoking heaviness. Investing in smoking prevention and treatment may help reduce mental health problems in future generations.
