The study utilized adhesively bonded 3-point bending specimen to obtain bilinear elastic-plastic approximations to the shear stress-strain behavior of a common acrylic adhesive. The parameters for these approximations were quickly derived from simplified versions of a beam model. Experimental results showed that the predicted load-displacement curves and shear strain distributions were in good agreement with the actual measurements.
The adhesively bonded 3-point bending specimen was employed for obtaining bilinear elastic-plastic approximations to the shear stress-strain behaviour of a common acrylic adhesive. The parameters of those approximations were quickly obtained from two simplified versions of a previously developed beam model. The latter predicted fairly accurately the experimental load-displacement curves. The shear strain distributions predicted were also in reasonably good agreement with digital image correlation measurements at the failure point. However, the high specimen stiffness needed to avoid adherend yielding did not allow an accurate determination of the initial part of the shear stress-strain curve. Nevertheless, the present testing and data analysis approach seem to provide a quick way of obtaining bilinear approximations to adhesive shear stress-strain curves.
