Bi-oil, the liquid product from biomass fast pyrolysis, is a kind of clean and sustainable fuel. However, its physicochemical characteristics are not stable, which hinder its actual applications. In this research, bio-oil made from rice husk by a commercial-scale biomass fast pyrolysis plant was utilized to investigate the effects of long period storage (two years) under three different conditions: at 4 degrees C in a refrigerator, at 25 degrees C in a room, and at outdoors in the nature conditions. In each condition, three samples collected from the upper, middle and the bottom of the containers. The results showed that low temperature (4 degrees C) can slow down the process of degradation during storage. The bio-oils endure the most severe aging process at 25 degrees C in a room. The maximum value of the viscosity was obtained from the bottom layer of bio-oil stored at 25 degrees C (348.5 +/- 2.9 mm(2) s(-1)), which is 50.8 times higher than that of the original bio-oil. The alcohols, furans and hydrocarbons are prone to accumulate in the bottom layers. This research could give insight on degradation of bio-oils at the distinct storage conditions and will be useful for designing the storage system and maintaining the quality of bio-oils in transportation and storage.
