High and efficient carbon dioxide chemisorption on a new high lithium-content ceramic; hexalithium cobaltate (Li6CoO4)

Hexalithium cobaltate (Li6CoO4) was synthesized, characterized and tested as a possible carbon dioxide (CO2) captor. Li6CoO4 was prepared by solid-state reaction, where an initial structural analysis suggests high lithium ion diffusion, based on the crystal oxygen triangle gap structural area measurements. Li6CoO4 was dynamic and isothermally tested under different CO2 or CO2-O-2 atmospheres, where Li6CoO4 exhibited good CO2 chemisorption kinetics and efficiencies. All these results allowed to determine the CO2 chemisorption reaction mechanism, which varies based on temperature and the oxygen presence or absence. Additionally, cyclic Li6CoO4 carbonation-decarbonation experiments showed interesting efficiencies. Thus, Li6CoO4 presents an interesting alternative as a high temperature CO 2 captor for post-combustion processes.
