In this paper, a comprehensive state-of-the-art review of Fault Tolerant Control Systems (FTCS) is presented with the latest advances and applications. The overall aim of an FTCS is to accommodate faults in the system components during operation and maintain stability with little or acceptable degradation in the performance levels. Such systems are of great importance for safety and mission-critical applications where human lives are involved and service continuity is of extreme importance. In this paper, various types of faults in the sensors and actuators have been described. Types and classifications of Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) including active, passive and hybrid approaches with the latest design techniques are presented. Finally, a review of the stability and reliability analysis of FTCS is presented with research gaps. The contribution of the study is to benefit new and existing researchers in FTCS domain with the latest trends and applications for future research directions. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
