A novel 1D cadmium-based luminescent metal-organic complex {[Cd(CIP)(2)(H2O)(2)](n)center dot 2.5H(2)O} (1) (HCIP=4-(4-carboxylphenyl)-2,6-di(4-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)pyridine), has been synthesized through a solvothermal method. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that complex 1 exhibits a 1D chain structure that is further extended to a 3D supramolecular framework by H-bonds and and pi-stacking interaction. Luminescence tests suggest that complex 1 displays excellent sensitivity and selectivity to detect Fe3+, CrO42-/Cr2O72-, and a wide range of nitroaromatic explosives. It is the first example of a Cd-based LMOC as luminescent probe to detect Fe3+, CrO42-/Cr2O72- in aqueous solution and nitroaromatic explosives in both liquid and vapor phases.
