In this paper, an innovative shear-bending combined (SBC) metallic damper is proposed, which consists of a shear panel (SP) damper as the shear component, and a series of K-shaped plates as the bending component. Moreover, the out-of-plane buckling of the web plate in the SP damper is restrained by the K-shaped plates in pairs. Cyclic tests were conducted to evaluate the hysteretic performance, energy dissipation capacity and deformation behavior of the proposed metallic damper. It is indicated that the overall performance of the SBC damper can be greatly enhanced if the shear component and the bending component work interactively rather than independently. Moreover, a smaller gap between the web plate and the K-shaped plates can be beneficial to the hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation of the SBC damper. Finally, potential improvements are also suggested to reduce the scratch damage caused by friction between the web plate and the K-shaped plates. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
