In the materials level, a review for damping capacity of cement-matrix composites modified by various additives is presented in order to summarize the knowledge development in this field. With the aid of stiffness mismatch between the phase interface and the viscoelasticity supplied by the appropriate polymer particle or latex in the cement-matrix composites, the damping capacity can be increased with slightly decrease of the stiffness and strength. Friction as the cracks in the matrix slides over the fiber at high shear stress is found to be the main damping mechanism in the fiber reinforced concrete. Filler effect should be taken care with the particle size and volume fraction of the inorganic powders modified cement matrix composites. The multiple phase boundaries and multiple interfaces between nanotubes and cement-matrix exhibit higher possibility of the interfacial slippage that can cause higher energy dissipation. Although not widely exploited yet, both network graphite and low stiffness aggregates show the potential to be tailored for damping enhancement purpose by interfacial engineering.
