CdO and MgO nanoparticles and CdO-MgO nanocomposite were synthesised and investigated by XRD, FESEM(Field emission scanning electron microscopy) with EDS(Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR). XRD(X-ray diffraction) shows a cubic structure with an average crystallite size of 44 (CdO), 37 (MgO) and 32 nm (CdO-MgO). FTIR indicates the characteristic vibrational frequencies as Cd-O (460 cm(-1)), Mg-O (505 cm(-1)) and CdO-MgO (698 and 512 cm(-1)). From the UV-Vis spectra, the band gap is estimated. From the cyclic voltammetry measurements, the redox potential is 1.27 (CdO), 1.24 (MgO) and 1.16 V (CdO-MgO). The photocatalytic degradation study of ultrasonic-assisted CdO and MgO nanoparticles and CdO-MgO nanocomposite was investigated against the alizarin red S dye under natural solar light irradiation. The antibacterial activity against food-borne pathogens was tested against gram-positive bacteria (Micrococcus luteusand Rhodococcus rhodochrous) and gram-negative bacteria (Vibriocholerae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Aeromonas hydrophila and E. coli).
