Cyanoacetic acid reacted selectively with 4-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidin-2(1H)-ones with the formation of Michael addition-decarboxylation products in DMSO solution at 85 degrees C and Mannich reaction products when the reagents were fused together under solventfree conditions.
