The use of biomass as precursor for the production of carbon nanomaterials has attracted considerable attention because of its unique properties such as high surface area, low density, high chemical stability, and good electrical conductivity. Additionally, carbon nanomaterials have widely applications in drug storage and delivery, carbon fixation, catalyst or catalyst supports, Li-ion batteries, sensing, adsorbents, and gas separation. In this review, we highlighted the developments of effective, economic, and environmental friendly synthetic technologies to transform various biomass into the carbon nanomaterials. Properties and applications of the carbon nanomaterials derived from different environmental friendly renewable biomass were reviewed. Problems and future trends of these promising materials were also presented based on our knowledge. We hope that the carbon nanomaterials derived from biomass could have a great development and practical applications in the near future.
