Heat transfer via radiation can be enhanced across short distances when the system supports resonant tunneling of surface electromagnetic modes. For certain metamaterials, the transverse electric mode is available. Such magnetically active artificial composites can facilitate coupling with the transverse electric mode of graphene. Graphene transverse electric or magnetic channels for the near-field radiation can be emphasized or inhibited by design.
