Wastewater from sugar industries has complex characteristics and is considered as a challenge for environmental engineers in terms of its treatment. Treating the SIWW is thus crucially important not only for the environment, but also for the purpose of recycling water for use in industrial processes. Before treatment, it is important to know the effluent parameter as well as the effect on environment. Many different types of techniques or methods are introduced and modified according to the requirement due to their difference in compositions. To treat the SIWW, generally physicochemical methods or biological methods are applied combined or separately as per the water quality parameter. In this regard, an effort has been made to study the physicochemical characteristics, treatment, and effects of SIWW before treatment. Work done by various authors is summarized in the literature.
