The fixation and conversion of carbon dioxide is a controversial topic. Physical fixation or separation processes that exploit differences in solubility between carbon dioxide and methane in ionic liquids can be employed, resulting in purer gases and higher combustion efficiencies. In order to remove carbon dioxide completely, the structure of ionic liquids must be tailored at a molecular level. The subsequent conversion of carbon dioxide into useful industrial intermediate molecules can also be considered through the reaction of reactive epoxides with inert carbon dioxide.
