A novel red (lambda(max)em = 632 nm) fluorescent probe based on 3-hydroxyflavone was designed and synthesized for thiol recognition with high sensitivity and excellent selectivity. Application of the probe for selective detection of intracellular thiols has been successfully demonstrated.
